In the aftermath of the Federal levee breaks of Hurricane Katrina of 2005, Friedler wandered the devastated areas of New Orleans he had strong ties to - Gentilly, Upper 9th Ward, Lower 9th Ward, Arabi - trying to make sense of the trauma and loss. These photographs honor the 30,000 displaced New Orleanians who were never able to return, the 4,000 who perished, and those who returned to fight for their beloved homes, community, and culture.
